" I spend a lot of time on my Nordhavn 40 and rely on the bbx to pay bills, review e-mails and stay in touch with friends. I've been fortunate to have a three year history with no problems and excellent connectivity all along the increasing number of marinas in Washington and BC. And I used only the internal antenna and software built into my VAIO notebook running Windows XP.
However this summer I suddenly had problems at Skyline connecting to the bbx and found my reliable setup virtually inoperative even though I'm in the same slip and with the same computer equipment. So when Kevin advised that I should buy the bbx Antenna kit my electrical engineering training kicked in and I express my skepticism. I told Kevin, "but I can see your bbx antanna only 120 meters away."
Kevin offered me a trial with the kit that I couldn't refuse and to my surprise his recommendation based upon his extensive experience proved to be right on. Apparently with the recent popularity of home (and boat) wireless computer and telephone systems there is just too much interference for my VAIO's hardware and software to perform as it had in the past. And in fact the marina which uses to be nearly wireless signal free is now polluted with no less than seven wireless nodes.
So if you are like me, just get the card and antenna, support the bbx and enjoy better connectivity even when anchored in some corner of a bbx marina. When you consider the limited customer base for the bbx service, it is a good value."
